Winter brings the most dangerous roadways of any season due to the constant variations in the weather. Fortunately we’re in the early weeks of fall which means there’s plenty of time to freshen up on driving in winter. Here at Cronic Nissan, we have some helpful tips for driving in the snow that will help you arrive at your destination safely this winter.
- Hills – Hills can be a driver’s worst enemy and winter only makes them worse. Avoid powering up hills as that will just leave your wheels spinning. Don’t stop on a hill if possible as you’ll likely end up at the bottom and have to start over again. In order to reach the top of a hill, start moving prior to reaching the hill and allow the inertia to carry you to the top.
- Braking – Drivers who don’t know how or when to brake often end up struggling to get moving in winter. Instead of stopping at a light, try to slow down just enough to roll through it. Doing so will allow you to keep moving and forego any fishtailing or spinning wheels.
- Preparing – Put together an emergency kit before winter, just in case something does happen. Bring a first aid kit, plenty of food and water, blankets, extra clothing, and ensure your gas tank is always at least a quarter full.
