New Nissan ZEOD RC Engine is More Powerful than an F1

Nissan has launched the new, revolutionary engine that will power the equally revolutionary ZEOD RC that will become the first entry at Le Mans to complete a lap of the Circuit de la Sarthe under nothing but electric power this June.

It’s an incredibly small engine—88 pounds, 19.68” tall x 15.74” long x 7.78” wide. You could fit in inside your luggage before you get on the plane. But it packs the power you would expect from a much larger engine, producing 380 Nm of torque at up to 7,500 RPM. That’s a ratio of 10 horsepower per kilogram, which is even better than the new engines that’ll be used in Formula 1 cars this year after the new regulations.

“We knew the electric component of the Nissan ZEOD RC was certainly going to turn heads at Le Mans, but our combined zero emission on demand electric/petrol powerplant is quite a stunning piece of engineering,” said Darren Cox, Nissan’s Global Motorsport Director. “We’re aiming to maintain our position as industry leaders in focusing on downsizing. Lessons learned from the development of the engine will be seen in Nissan road cars of the future.”

Seen in Nissan road cars of the future, eh? Now that’s definitely what we like to here. We look forward to seeing those future road cars—and you, dear reader—at the Cronic Nissan dealership.
